Abstract

Borehole radar have been becoming very usefull tool of high resolution probing for oil field application and the shallow subsuface. To improve understanding the electromagnetic wave propagation associated with borehole radar, this paper introduce a 2-D PSTD algorithm which allows us to model the full EM wavefield for rotatinally symmetric structures. This technique uses the fast Fourier transform(FFT) algorithm for spatial derivatives and uses the exponential attenuation absorbing boundary conditions to eliminate the wraparound effect due to the spatial periodicity indroduced by FFT. The PSTD algorithm is then applied to simulate for oil field application. The effects of the borehole mud and the response of different types of formations are simulated and analyzed. The simulated borehole radar response can be used to extrapolate the formation structure around the wellbore and helpful in obtaining correct petrophysical parameters.
